JOIN A BOARD!

Updated: Apr 17, 2024

Have you ever thought, “I'd like to join the board of a non-profit in my community; what would that entail? " Or have you ever attended a charity event and thought, "I love this mission and how they serve their community; how can I help?" It's true; getting involved, rolling up your sleeves, and volunteering can feel good and make a significant impact.

Before you jump in, here are three things to think about:

  1. Time commitment: One of the first questions you should ask the board chair or recruiting lead is the expected time commitment. Don't sign up for a volunteer board role that meets monthly and requires you to participate on two additional committees when you know you only have 3 - 5 hours a month to volunteer. Be honest with yourself and transparent with the organization about your capacity. If you can't commit fully now, maybe there's some wiggle room to engage you part-time, or you can partner with another board member to share the work while you learn more about the organization.

  2. Learn about the organization: It's essential to know the organization's mission and vision when you're committing to volunteer, but beyond the public information, take the time to learn who and how they serve their end users (clients/ customers/ community). How do they plan, what are their hiring practices, how does senior leadership report to the board, when were the bylaws last reviewed, and do they have updated policies for pregnancy and parental leave, receiving gifts-in-kind, and investing? The more you know, the more you can contribute.

  3. Network(!): Beyond scheduled board meetings, seek opportunities to connect with board members and staff, if appropriate. Take someone for a coffee or on a walk and talk through challenges and opportunities. Be open to brainstorming outside of the boardroom and offering your expertise.

I have been a (successful) board chair for the Kiwanis Club of Toronto Foundation for six years. Our board has redesigned how we award $250,000 in annual grants to support leadership, mentorship, and arts and culture-based children's charities. We've assessed our own ESG goals in the way we invest our money to ensure they align with the values of Kiwanis. Our signature events, Kiwanis Cocktail Royale (June) and Golf Day (September) have raised funds that we proudly reinvest in the community each year. We also award a giant trophy for the Community Impact Award to a well-deserving organization knocking it out of the park supporting kids. Who doesn't love a giant trophy, right?

It has been challenging, but it's been fun. Together, we've funded and celebrated hundreds of charities in Toronto that support the needs and dreams of children and youth.

Maybe now's your time to join a board. If you're interested in supporting children and youth in Toronto, let's talk!
